Car Full O’Kids

What do you do when you’re driving around town and every young kid in the car is yelling, crying and misbehaving? I know we have all been there and it makes for a pretty stressful situation. Your heart is racing and you do not want to shout over your kids.

First, take a deep breath. Focus on the road. Stay calm until you can stop the car or make it to your destination. Turn on some soothing music if possible (I always keep a disc I made in the car with peaceful music).  You can try singing (kids always love this) or anything that will safely alter their attention onto something else. “Ooh, look kids, there’s a motorcycle,” or “hey kids, let’s talk about our favorite movie of all time!” Basically anything will change their attention from what they are being rowdy about if you use enough enthusiasm. Kids have very short attention spans, as we know.

It is stressful and you wonder sometimes if passersby see your rambunctious crew completely freaking out in the car. The truth is… we have all been there. My kids and I actually have some of the most meaningful discussions on our long trips to school each morning. They ask questions and they love to hear about my most embarrassing moments as a kid. Kids just like to talk. Instead of letting them have a free for all in car-rides, ask them questions, get them talking. Because before you know it, you’ve calmly reached your destination.
